Changing Your Carpets

Carpets and rugs are some of the most popular household items today. You can hardly find a house that does not have at least one of these loom-woven coverings gracing the floors. The word carpet is derived from the Armenian “karpet”, with “kar” referring to a stitch or knot. It is believed that the first carpets originated at some time between the third and second millennium BC in the Caucasus region. The oldest carpet to have ever been found is the Pazyryk carpet, which dates from the fifth to fourth century BC. It was unearthed by Sergei Ivanovich Rudenko from a burial ground in Siberia in 1949. From its origins in the Caucasus, carpets were then brought to Europe through trade between Armenia and Venice. At first, carpets were used to cover tables or hung on walls. It was not until the 18th century when they began to be used on the floors of homes as well.

Carpet Stain Removal

Different kinds of textiles and other materials have been used to create carpets. The various carpet makers select the best of these materials for their appearance, cost, durability, and ease of use in the production or weaving process. Manufacturers also choose fabrics which can be easily cleaned, so that carpet stain removal can be made easier for owners. Some of the most common yarns and fibres used to make carpets are wool, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and PTT (polytrimethylene terephthalate). Wool is used by most carpet weavers since it is very durable, dyes easily, and is readily available. However, it can be quite expensive, so it is often blended with other synthetic fibres, which only increases its durability. Nylon is also a durable material, but carpets made with it tend to stain because of dye sites found on the fibres. Once these dye sites are filled, however, then nylon can be made resistant to different stains. Polyester carpets have hydrophobic properties, making them stain-resistant. They are frequently sold in low prices, making them popular with budget buyers.

The carpets, though, can be crushed or matted down easily, so owners have to be careful not to place them in areas that see a lot of foot traffic. However, carpets made with polypropylene, especially the ones with small loops, are suitable for places with a lot of traffic such as offices. They are also easy to clean and wear very well. PTT, meanwhile, shares similarities with polyester, but its fibres are more resilient. Carpets made with this material are resistant to both stains and molds. When you are shopping for a carpet or rug, make sure that you know what materials were used to weave it so that you will be able to take better care of the fabric. In addition, get a professional carpet cleaning service to visit your home and look after your carpets, especially if you happen to own expensive ones.
